“Wearily, I Make My Bed”

tossed covers

from a restless night

tell a lonely story

the bed

big enough for two

comforting

only one

offers peace

to it’s single inhabitant

a lonesome pillow

stands guard

protecting a

sometimes, empty head

from crashing in it’s wake

of fitful sleep

we make our own bed

where we, therefor

must lie

the bed is made again

on another day

existing in it’s

own space

separating

daily life from

daily rest

who is to see

this calm ocean of dreams

when it’s owner

sails recklessly

within a ship of fools

encumbered in the thoughts

of another

lonely night

cast adrift

within it’s peaceful existence

fearing the next torrential storm

to wreak havoc

within the field of dreams

calming the ocean

smoothing out each wrinkle

pacifying the sea of life

to which we all return

amongst all the other

wayward travelers

lonely and unguided

wearily, I make my bed
